Background:-

Nearly every state in the U.S. has adopted a version of the Landlord and Tenant Act. The act governs what you, as a tenant, need to do and what the landlord must do for you. It covers everything from moving in and paying a security deposit, to privacy and evictions. While there are minor differences from state to state, most laws are universal. You should get to know your rights under these acts.

The rights and duties of landlords and tenants are spelled out in federal law, state statutes, local ordinances, safety and housing codes, common law, contract law, and a number of court decisions. These responsibilities can vary from place to place around the state. Tenants in federal housing and other forms of subsidized housing may have additional rights under federal law not covered in

Why Should You Attend?

Landlord-tenant law includes rights and obligations each landlord and each tenant has with regard to the rental property. Both parties need to know the basics of renting a place, how to collect or pay security deposits, the basics of state and federal laws regarding fair housing, and more.

If you are a landlord, you may need help working out tax deductions or determining how to get a renter evicted because of unpaid rent. Tenants, on the other hand, may need help understanding their rights to tenant safety, how security deposits are returned, and whether they can sublet the rental property.
